Alexa Grasso eager to test Mexican-style boxing vs. Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 285

Alexa Grasso has proven for a while that she’s one of the best female strikers in the UFC. And in a few days, she’ll get a chance to further that claim. Grasso is set to challenge women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC 285 in Las Vegas. This is a monumental moment for Grasso (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC). Not only is she making history as the first Mexico-born woman to challenge for a UFC title, but she’ll also get a chance to prove her Mexican-style boxing is indeed at the very top of this sport. “This is the best test to show that I have the best boxing in the division,” Grasso told MMA Junkie in Spanish . “Obviously I’m not going to win the fight by just using my hands, because she’s a very complete fighter, and I need to have all areas covered, but definitely my biggest weapon. I’m sure that my hands will shine that night.” Grasso believes her famed boxing style will play a key role in her fight against Shevchenko (23-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC). Sh

Michael Page enjoyed BKFC experience, says he's '100 percent' open to another fight

DUBLIN – Despite falling short against Mike Perry, Michael Page would definitely take another bare-knuckle boxing fight. Page (20-2 MMA, 16-2 BMMA)  lost a hard-fought majority decision to Perry at BKFC 27 last August at OVO Arena Wembley in London. After five rounds of back-and-forth action, the judges scored the fight a split draw, resulting in a final round where Perry outlasted MVP for the win. It was a much different experience for the talented kickboxer, but one he would certainly repeat. “One hundred percent yes,” Page told reporters, including MMA Junkie, backstage at Bellator 291. “Bellator’s cool, I’m staying here for now. But 100 percent yes, I would.” Related Video: Do we want to see a Mike Perry vs. Michael Page rematch? UFC 285 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+. In the main event, the vacant heavyweight title is up for grabs as Jon Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) makes his highly anticipated divisional debut after a three-year layoff to take on former interim champion Ciryl Gane (11-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC). And in the co-headliner, women’s flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko (23-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC) goes for her eighth consecutive title defense when she meets Alexa Grasso (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), who seeks to become the first Mexican woman to win a UFC belt. The first episode of “Embedded” follows the featured fighters while they get ready for fight week. Here is the UFC’s description of the episode from YouTube: Ciryl Gane stretches his jet lag away. J

Bellator 291 winner Norbert Novenyi Jr. impressed with champ Johnny Eblen, 'but I'm coming'

DUBLIN – Norbert Novenyi Jr. knows he still has work to do but warns Johnny Eblen that he’s coming for him. Novenyi (6-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) made quick work of Andy Manzolo this past Saturday at Bellator 291 in Dublin by knocking him out in the first round. Despite still being young in his career, the 23-year-old unbeaten prospect is confident that he’ll rise to the challenge of someday competing against Eblen (13-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA). “I can’t rush it. I know I’ve got so much to work on, and the division is full of killers,” Novenyi told MMA Junkie and other reporters following Bellator 291. “I mean, what Johnny Eblen did last fight was amazing. … I still feel like I have to get a couple of fights out of the way. I’m still 6-0 now, I’m still 23. I had a long time out. I want to get a couple of fights in, but I’m coming. I want all these middleweights to know while they’re doing their weights and pad sessions, I’m putting in work.” He continued, “For me to outwork these guys, it’s easy.

Jeremy Kennedy says title shot vs. Patricio Freire 'fight to make' after Bellator 291

DUBLIN – Jeremy Kennedy thinks he’s done more than enough to earn a title shot after Bellator 291. Kennedy (19-3 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) swept the judges’ scorecards in a unanimous decision win over Pedro Carvalho this past Saturday at 3Arena in Dublin. Entering the fight, Kennedy viewed Carvalho as a No. 1 contender bout and now eyes featherweight champion Patricio Freire . “I believe so,” Kennedy told MMA Junkie and other reporters following Bellator 291. “I don’t know who else there is for me to fight. That’s three wins in a row, and I’m starting 2023 with wins over Sanchez, Pico, and Carvalho, all ranked in the top five when I beat them, and so I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do. They’re all dominant victories. I think that’s the fight to make now.” Related Bellator 291 post-event facts: Yaroslav Amosov's incredible streak hits 27 fights Bellator 291: Best photos from Dublin Patricio Freire wants drop to bantamweight – and Bellator event in Brazil Kennedy thinks

Aspen Ladd vs. Olena Kolesnyk among announced fights to complete 2023 PFL 2 lineup

Aspen Ladd ’s return to the PFL cage has been booked as she will take part in the promotion’s women’s featherweight season. The former UFC contender is set to take on Olena Kolesnyk at 2023 PFL 2 on April 7 at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. The Ladd-Kolesnyk matchup was one of several announced Monday to complete the PFL 2 lineup. They join the previously announced main and co-main event bouts, with Ante Delija vs. Yorgan De Castro and Larissa Pacheco vs. Julia Budd. Ladd (10-3) is coming off a successful PFL debut , having beaten former Bellator champion Julia Budd in a showcase bout at the 2022 PFL Championships back in November. She defeated Budd by split decision. It was her first fight since her release from the UFC. Kolesnyk (7-5) is looking to bounce back from a loss to 2022 PFL women’s lightweight champion Larissa Pacheco. Prior to the defeat, the Ukrainian fighter was on a two-fight winning streak. Below is the complete 2023 PFL 2 lineup: MAIN CARD (ESPN 2

Julian Marquez: I was put on UFC 285 because 'they want to make sure people are entertained'

Julian Marquez thinks he was put on UFC 285 for a reason. Saturday’s event is headlined by Jon Jones, who takes on Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+. Marquez (9-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) will open up the televised prelims against Marc-Andre Barriault (14-6 MMA, 3-5 UFC), and promises fans they’re in for an exciting battle. “They need entertainment,” Marquez told MMA Junkie Radio. “We have such a spectacular card on (Saturday) with Jon Jones coming back and Ciryl Gane going there – it’s a huge card and they want to make sure people are entertained, so they put Julian Marquez on that card and they want people to watch it. “That’s why they put me on the prelims and people are going to tune in. They’re going to know that Marc and I are going to bring it, they’re going to know it’s going to be exciting, it’s going to be a bloodbath and it’s going to be ending with a

Khasan Magomedsharipov doesn't see many upcoming threats in Bellator's featherweight division

DUBLIN – Khasan Magomedsharipov  doesn’t see too many threats in the featherweight division. Magomedsharipov (8-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) remained unbeaten when he stopped Rafael Hudson by TKO at Bellator 291 this past Saturday at 3Arena in Dublin. One of the brightest prospects on the roster, Magomedsharipov is confident that with time, he can take out the division’s elite. “I don’t see strong guys in featherweight,” Magomedsharipov said post-fight. “Yes, (A.J.) McKee, (Patricio) ‘Pitbull’ (Freire) and a couple of guys (are) very strong. The others guys are strong, but not fantastic. I feel I can beat everybody no problem – A.J. McKee, ‘Pitbull’ – but I need a little bit of time. A couple of years I’ll stay in Bellator. I’ll get this belt. “(Opponent) doesn’t matter – wrestler, striker, grappler, it doesn’t matter. Jon Jones: It's crazy to consider Ciryl Gane 'the most technical kickboxer I've ever faced'

Jon Jones thinks Ciryl Gane is being overhyped. Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) faces Gane (11-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) for the vacant heavyweight title in Saturday’s UFC 285 headliner at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+. Gane is being dubbed as one of Jones’ toughest tests due to his speed, agility and technique in the standup game. However, Jones says he’s faced better on the feet and pointed to his split decision win over Thiago Santos at UFC 239. He also took aim at Gane’s past opposition – including his lone loss to former heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou at UFC 270, where he was outwrestled in a decision loss . Twitter reacts to Jake Paul's split decision loss to Tommy Fury in boxing match

Tommy Fury promised to take away Jake Paul ’s undefeated boxing record on Sunday, and he did just that against his heated rival in Saudi Arabia. After two previously failed attempts to book the fight, Fury (9-0) and Paul (6-1) finally got in the ring, and it was the younger brother of heavyweight boxing champ Tyson Fury who got his hand by split decision to stay undefeated in his professional career. Paul has been the target of much hatred from fans, media and fellow fighters since his foray into combat sports, and to little surprise, many celebrated his demise. Augusto Sakai relieved to snap four-fight skid: 'It's been such a hard time in my life'

LAS VEGAS – Augusto Sakai can breathe a little easier now. The UFC heavyweight picked up a much-needed win Saturday when he outpointed Don’Tale Mayes (9-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) for a unanimous decision on the main card of UFC Fight Night 220 . Sakai (15-5-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) entered the event on a four-fight losing skid and winless since 2020. It was a tough spot for Sakai, but he’s now starting to put that skid behind him. “I’m so happy. It’s been such a hard time in my life these past couple of years,” Sakai said at the UFC Fight Night 220 post-fight press conference. “I started here in the (Dana White’s) Contender Series in 2018. Dana White: Tatiana Suarez resolidified herself as 'one of the best in the world' at UFC Fight Night 220

LAS VEGAS – UFC president Dana White couldn’t have been much more impressed with the “incredibly talented” Tatiana Suarez in her return to the octagon at UFC Fight Night 220 . After nearly four years away from competition due to injuries and other setbacks, undefeated wrestling standout Suarez (9-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) finally made her comeback on Saturday and defeated Montana De La Rosa (12-8-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC) by second-round submission at the UFC Apex. It was a largely dominant performance, and showed she hasn’t lost much of an edge in terms of skill since her previous fight in June 2019. White said it’s a “big deal” for Suarez to perform in the manner she did, especially against a durable foe like De La Rosa, who had never previously been finished in her UFC career. “She looked incredible, especially with the time off,” White told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at the UFC Fight Night 220 post-fight news conference. “Everybody knows how I feel about that much time off. Tatiana Suarez targets drop to strawweight next, lists Rose Namajunas as potential opponent

LAS VEGAS – Tatiana Suarez is set on a move back to strawweight, despite having a successful return at 125 pounds. Suarez made her long-awaited return to competition Saturday on the main card of UFC Fight Night 220. Suarez (9-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC), who hadn’t competed in nearly four years due to a series of injuries, submitted Montana De La Rosa (12-8-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC) in a women’s flyweight bout. But despite picking up a dominant win at 125 pounds, as well as a $50,000 bonus, Suarez is determined to return to her original weight class and resume a title run. “I think they should give me a really good opponent at strawweight, and I’ll earn it,” Suarez told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 220 post-fight press conference. “I’ve never been given anything in my life. I’ve always earned it, and I don’t mind doing that because I think that builds character. You have to work for the things you want in your life. Floyd Mayweather reminds us in exhibition of what made him great

(This story first was published at Boxing Junkie .) Floyd Mayweather just turned 46. He couldn’t possibly compete at a high level against prime opponents in sanctioned bouts at this stage of the game. Or could he? “Money” looked a lot like the dominating fighter he was at his best in an eight-round exhibition with reality TV star and former MMA fighter Aaron Chalmers on Saturday at O2 Arena in London, Mayweather’s first-ever fight in the U.K. He didn’t try to beat up Chalmers even though he certainly could have. He merely showed glimpses of what made him great, firing off his quick, accurate jab and landing a variety of power shots at will. Chalmers was as much a spectator as anyone else. And what about Chalmers’ offensive efforts? Forget it. The 35-year-old Englishman tried to land punches but he was in against arguably the greatest defensive fighter of all time. Mayweather saw everything coming as if Chalmers was moving in slow motion and ducked out of the way. Either that or h

KSW 79 results: Heavyweight champ Phil De Fries spoils Todd Duffee's return, runs through him for revenge

Phil De Fries promised his rematch with Todd Duffee would turn out differently. Boy was he right. De Fries ran through Duffee on Saturday at KSW 79 in Liberec, Czech Republic. The heavyweight champ dominated from start to finish until he used vicious ground-and-pound to force referee Michael Bell to stop it 3 minutes and 46 seconds into the first round. The outcome was disappointing for Duffee (9-4), who was fighting for the first time since retiring three-and-a-half years ago . On the flip side, it was sweet revenge for De Fries (23-6), who lost by first-round TKO to Duffee more than 10 years ago at UFC 155. “It feels good, you know,” De Fries said afterward. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Todd. UFC Fight Night 220 results: Joe Solecki puts Carl Deaton to sleep with tight rear-naked choke

It appeared UFC lightweight Joe Solecki wanted nothing more than a rear-naked choke finish at UFC Fight Night 220 . Thanks to his aggressive approach and consistent attack, Solecki (13-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) was able to get what he was looking for, spoiling the debut of Carl Deaton on the prelims at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas with a technical submission finish at 4:55 of Round 2. A vast majority of the opening round was spent with Solecki on the back of Deaton (17-6 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in a standing position against the cage. Solecki searched for the rear-naked choke repeatedly while alternating body triangles. Deaton remained calm, and kept his neck protected long enough to see the second round. UFC Fight Night 220 results: Nurullo Aliev decisions Rafael Alves despite point deduction for biting

Lightweight prospect Nurullo Aliev remained undefeated in his octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 220 , but it didn’t come without an odd bit of controversy. Aliev (9-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) was deducted a point by referee Mark Smith for biting Rafael Alves (20-12 MMA, 1-3 UFC) in the opening round at the UFC Apex, but it didn’t stop him from getting his hand raised by majority decision with scores of 29-27, 29-27 and 28-28. During an exchange on the mat where Alves was in bottom position, he attempted to push away the head of Aliev. His fingers went in the direction of the mouth, though, then moments later Alves winced and complained to the referee that he’d been bitten. After a halt in the action, Smith consulted the Nevada State Athletic Commission to look at the replay. There was no conclusive evidence of the bite on the footage because of the angle, but Smith said he inspected visible bite marks of Alves’ finger. He opted to take a point, which changed the complexion of the fight. Alie

Austin Trout interested in fighting BKFC champ-champ Luis Palomino: 'He's definitely a good fighter'

Austin Trout is more than down to take on BKFC’s finest. The former WBA boxing champion is ready to challenge two-division BKFC champion Luis Palomino for one of his titles. Trout is coming off a successful bareknuckle boxing debut against former UFC contender Diego Sanchez at last weekend’s BKFC Knucklemania 3 in Albuquerque, N.M. Despite only having one bareknuckle boxing fight under his belt, Trout feels capable of taking on the challenge. “If they’re going to give it to me, I’ll take it,” Trout told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’ve seen videos of Luis Palomino, and I’m not saying he’s not a good fighter. He’s definitely a good fighter and champ for a reason, but I see something, and I’m with it. If they give me that opportunity, I’ll take it.” Following Trout’s win over Sanchez, Palomino stepped into the ring to tease a potential fight between the two. Palomino would like to defend in April – a date Trout likes, but isn’t 100 percent sure about. “I think I can be ready by April, w

Tyson Fury confident Tommy Fury knocks out Jake Paul, expects rematch 'for even more money'

Tyson Fury has no doubt that his brother will get the job done against Jake Paul . The boxing heavyweight champion expects Tommy Fury to put away Paul with ease when they meet in the ring Sunday evening. Both Paul and Tommy are set to clash in an eight-round, 185-pound catchweight bout that takes place in Saudi Arabia. The event will be available on pay-per-view through ESPN+. He drops them, knocks them out – that’s 90 percent. So Jake Paul is no different. He’ll get it, as well.” Entering the fight, most odds have Paul as the favorite to win. Tyson thinks that’s just been a great hype campaign from Paul and his team. He believes the YouTube star has no chance at beating Tommy. “Conor McGregor made everybody think that he was going to b
