Marcos Rogerio confident he belongs in UFC rankings, wants 'explosive' fight vs. Derrick Lewis

LAS VEGAS – Marcos Rogerio wants the smoke from Derrick Lewis. The veteran UFC heavyweight called out the most successful knockout artist in the division following his most recent win inside the octagon. Rogerio (21-8-1 MMA, 10-6 UFC) defeated Waldo Cortes-Acosta (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a unanimous decision on the main card of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 223 at the UFC Apex. Rogerio is determined to prove he belongs in the UFC’s official rankings, and he thinks a fight against Lewis can do just that. “I know that my place is among the top 15 of the division,” Rogerio told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 223 post-fight news conference. “There was a fight that was made a long time ago with (Francis) Ngannou and Derrick Lewis, and everyone thought it was going to be a big explosion in the cage, but it wasn’t. Ngannou didn’t engage and it was a boring fight. I do believe that if I fight Derrick Lewis that it will be explosive.” Related UFC Fight Night 223: Best photos from Las Ve

UFC Fight Night 223 video: Caio Borralho submits Michal Oleksiejczuk, calls out Derek Brunson

Caio Borralho was fired up after getting his first octagon finish on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 223 , walking up to the camera and demanding the world put some “respect on my f*cking name.” After three decision wins to open his promotional tenure, Borralho (14-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) got the stoppage he’s been looking for when he took the back of Michal Oleksiejczuk (18-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC) in the second round of their middleweight bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, then locked in a rear-naked choke to finish the job. UFC Fight Night 223 video: Fernando Padilla drops Julian Erosa twice for brutal – and contested – stoppage

It took Fernando Padilla nearly two years from the time of his UFC signing to make his debut. Saturday, he finally made his first walk – and added a highlight to his reel. Padilla (15-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) defeated Julian Erosa (28-11 MMA, 6-7 UFC) via TKO due to punches at 1:41 of Round 1. The featherweight bout took place as part of the UFC Fight Night 223 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The stoppage was controversial in the eyes of some, including Erosa who contested referee Chris Tognoni’s decision to step in. Erosa was dropped twice during a flurry of Padilla punches, nearly all of which landed. The final blow was a right hand, which put Erosa on the seat of his pants. Erosa popped up, but as he rose, Tognoni waved off the fight. Jorge Masvidal refers Nate Diaz to celebrity lawyer amid street fight case

Jorge Masvidal hopes he can make a connection for Nate Diaz that helps him put his current legal issues in the past. Masvidal, who beat Diaz by doctor’s stoppage TKO in the lone “BMF” title fight in history at UFC 244 in November 2019, is looking to offer a helping hand to his former opponent after Diaz found himself in the crosshairs of the law after he was caught on video choking Logan Paul lookalike Rodney Peterson unconscious during a street brawl in New Orleans this past weekend. Diaz turned himself in to the New Orleans Police Department after an arrest warrant was issued , and is currently out on a $10,000 bond . He does not currently have a hearing date scheduled, but when the time has come, Masvidal said he was told to try to make a connection with celebrity lawyer Bradford Cohen. “Nate Diaz if you see this, I’ve got a top lawyer in the country who wants to represent you,” Masvidal told MMA Junkie on Friday. “His name is Brad Cohan. Chael Sonnen wants Robert Whittaker vs. Dricus Du Plessis scratched: 'It's not too late'

Chael Sonnen thinks the UFC made a mistake booking Robert Whittaker vs. Dricus Du Plessis . Whittaker (24-6 MMA, 15-4 UFC) is scheduled to face Du Plessis (19-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) at UFC 290 on July 8, in what is expected to be a No. 1 contender fight for middleweight champion Israel Adesanya according to Dana White . But Sonnen is advocating for Du Plessis to fight Adesanya (24-2 MMA, 13-2 UFC), and thinks his fight with Whittaker should have never been made. “It’s not too late,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel . “We shouldn’t have made du Plessis vs. Whittaker, should we have, guys? We should’ve made du Plessis vs. Adesanya. Izzy says, ‘I’m not going to fight anybody till I fight him.’ Izzy doesn’t care if he doesn’t beat Whittaker. … Matter of fact, Izzy predicts Whittaker is going to beat Du Plessis. Izzy doesn’t care if he’s coming off a loss. He doesn’t care if he’s coming off a knockout humiliating defeat, he’s going to fight him next.” Du Plessis and Adesanya have been goin

Victor Altamirano steps in to fight Tim Elliott at UFC Fight Night event

Victor Altamirano has stepped up to the plate for his first matchup against a ranked opponent. With Allan Nascimento out for undisclosed reasons, Altamirano (12-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) steps into a flyweight bout June 3 vs. Tim Elliott (18-12-1 MMA, 7-10 UFC). The card is a UFC Fight Night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Altamirano announced the bout Friday during an Instagram live with MMA Junkie . An additional person with knowledge of the matchup also confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Altamirano, 32, dropped his UFC debut but has since won back-to-back fights against Daniel Lacerda and Vinicius Salvadar. Both victories earned him $50,000 performance bonuses. Elliott, 36, is a former UFC flyweight title challenger who has won three of his most recent four bouts. He most recently competed at UFC 272 in March 2022 when he defeated Tagir Ulanbekov via unanimous decision. He was scheduled to compete i

Michal Oleksiejczuk not scared of Caio Borralho ahead of UFC Fight Night 223 co-headliner

LAS VEGAS – Michal Oleksiejczuk thinks a win over Caio Borralho on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 223 will land him a matchup against the “top 15 of the UFC rankings.” Oleksiejczuk (18-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC) will compete for the third time since dropping to middleweight when he meets Borralho (13-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) in the co-main event of Saturday’s card, which takes place at the UFC Apex and streams on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN2. Thus far, Oleksiejczuk is 2-0 with two knockout victories since dropping to his new weight class, and he said he feels sharp. “This division is ideal for me,” Oleksiejczuk told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 223 media day. “I feel very good in this division and my last two fights was very good because I knocked out my opponent. I am very happy.” After stopping Cody Brundage and veteran Sam Alvey in his first pair of bouts at 185 pounds, Oleksiejczuk thinks he’s facing a much stiffer task this time in Borralho, who has yet to b

Rodolfo Vieira plans to cut back on takedown attempts at UFC Fight Night 223

LAS VEGAS – Rodolfo Vieira intends to be more selective with his takedown attempts when he meets Cody Brundage at UFC Fight Night 223 . Vieira (8-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and Brundage (8-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) meet in the middleweight featured bout of Saturday’s card, which takes place at the UFC Apex and streams on ESPN+ following early prelims on ESPN2. After going 0-for-20 on takedown attempts in his previous outing against Chris Curtis in June, Vieira, a decorated jiu-jitsu champion, has been working hard on taking a more tactical and effective approach. “I’m not going to do what I did the last fight, like try a 1,000 takedowns,” Vieira told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 223 media day. “Of course I want to use my jiu-jitsu because it’s my background and what I do the best. My striking is very good as well and I’m very confident in all areas. But for sure I’m going to try to take him down and use my jiu-jitsu.” To hear more from Vieira, check out his complete

Scale snafus: UFC official weigh-in misses in 2023

The old adage is that the fight before the fight in MMA is the one with the scale. Weight-cutting struggles and eventual weight misses are a regular part of the sport. Throughout 2023, this story will be updated to include any UFC infractions on the scale – or UFC fights that are scrapped because of issues with a fighter’s weight. In an ideal world, by the end of the calendar year, this list will be a short one – but time will tell. Fighters listed are in chronological order of their scheduled bouts. Belal Muhammad: Gilbert Burns 'doesn't know what I'm gonna bring to the table' at UFC 288

Belal Muhammad is confident Gilbert Burns will have a hard time dealing with his style at UFC 288. Muhammad (22-3 MMA, 13-3 UFC) takes on Burns (22-5 MMA, 15-5 UFC) in a five-round co-main event May 6 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Unbeaten in his past nine fights, Muhammad has emerged victorious against multiple specialists. He thinks his ability to adjust against different styles will throw Burns off. “I think that matchup, stylistic-wise, like I fought the best grappler in the division with Demian Maia, I fought the best striker in the division with ‘Wonderboy,’ I fought the guy who knocked me out and his training partner in Luque, and I beat Luque and I fought the new up-and-coming hot star, strongest guy in the division in Sean Brady,” Muhammad said on “The Schaub Show.” “I fought every single style, and I don’t think Gilbert’s fought anybody like me. “I don’t think Gilbert’s fought anybody that’s gonna push it like me, move like me, adjust like me, make in-fight adju

Caio Borralho trained with Khamzat Chimaev, Paulo Costa and Sean Strickland for UFC Fight Night 223

LAS VEGAS –  Caio Borralho is pushing himself to the limit in pursuit of greatness, and that means mixing it up with some of the best in his division inside the training room. Borralho (13-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who meets Michal Oleksiejczuk (18-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 223 co-main event, did not leave any stones unturned as he looks to take the next step in the middleweight pecking order. “I went to train with Khamzat (Chimaev), I went to train with Paulo Costa, I went to train with Sean Strickland – all the good guys,” Borralho told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 223 media day. “I know I’m ready.” Some fighters would not exactly be keen to trade looks in the gym with fighters ranked above them in the same weight class, but Borralho takes an ego-less approach to his career. He knows what it takes to get better and climb to the top, and he’s taking the steps he sees as essential. “I’m very with my feet down to earth,” Borralho said

Sean Strickland explains why he's fighting unranked Abus Magomedov in July 1 UFC headliner

When top-ranked middleweight Sean Strickland ’s next fight was announced by the UFC, it turned heads. Strickland (26-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) was booked against Abus Magomedov (25-4-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a UFC headliner on July 1 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Strickland is ranked No. 7 by the UFC at 185 pounds, whereas Magomedov has fought only once in the octagon. So why did Strickland accept to fight an unranked opponent? His answer was simple. “They said, ‘Sean, you’re going to be waiting for a long time for a top 6+ guy to open up or we will pay you a lot of money to fight this guy” sooo here we are,” Strickland tweeted . “I just bought a new motorcycle and I’d like another one… thinking a sport bike if anyone has a hook up?!?!” Magomedov needed just 19 seconds to spark Dustin Stoltzfus in his UFC debut last September. He hasn’t competed since but saw two fights against Gerald Meerschaert in February and Makhmud Muradov in March get scrapped. Strickland was last seen in action in Janu

UFC Fight Night 223 headliner Song Yadong unfazed by Ricky Simon's game: 'In every skill, he's very average'

Y LAS VEGAS – Song Yadong recognizes Ricky Simon is a tough fighter, but the skills don’t have him worried. At UFC Fight Night 223 on Saturday, Yadong (19-7-1 MMA, 8-2-1 UFC) and Simon (20-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) collide in a five-round main event at the UFC Apex. The bout originally was scheduled for a three-round co-main event April 22. “He’s a very tough guy, a strong wrestler,” Yadong told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “His striking is getting better over the years. But, in every skill, he’s very average. I think my striking is better than him and my ground game is also better than him. If he wants to wrestle, let’s wrestle. If he wants jiu-jitsu, let’s do jiu-jitsu.” Yadong, 25, has not competed since a September loss to Cory Sandhagen by TKO due to a facial laceration . Despite the setback, Yadong has learned a lot and thinks the stakes still remain high as he enters his second UFC main event. “(I learned) don’t get caught early into t

Chad Mendes conflicted about fighting beyond BKFC 41: 'This stuff isn't a necessity anymore'

Chad Mendes hasn’t lost his desire to compete, but it needs to be worth it in order for him to continue past BKFC 41. Mendes takes on Eddie Alvarez in the co-main event Saturday at 1STBANK Center in Denver. The main card streams on FITE TV with a $49.99 price point. Mendes, a multiple-time UFC title challenger, said he’s still in top form but admits one of his main motivations is money. “Money talks big time,” Mendes told MMA Junkie Radio. “Obviously I feel like I’m still in my prime. I’m not to the point where I’m like, ‘Man, I’m falling behind here’ and starting to slack in sparring and getting beat up or anything like that. I’m still doing really well. I have no health issues, knock on wood right now, but obviously I feel like we’re all playing with fire every time we step in there. … I have a family and for me, it’s like this stuff isn’t a necessity anymore. “The money that I get from fighting isn’t something I absolutely need. I have some other businesses that are success

Ricky Simon downplays significance of headlining UFC Fight Night 223 vs. Song Yadong: 'It feels right'

LAS VEGAS – Ricky Simon is about to headline a UFC event for the first time, but there’s no reason to make a big deal about it. At least that’s the way he sees it. Simon, who’s No. 10 in the official UFC bantamweight rankings, meets No. 8 Song Yadong in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 223 main event at the UFC Apex. It’s taken five years for Simon to headline on the biggest stage, which came about only two weeks ago after Renato Moicano pulled out of the original headliner with Arman Tsarukyan, but none of that matters to him. “It feels right,” Simon told MMA Junkie and other reporters Wednesday at UFC Fight Night 223 media day. “I’m right where I’m supposed to be.” Simon made his UFC debut in April 2018 and won his first three promotional bouts, including a submission of current top 135-pound contender Merab Dvalishvili in his first fight. Simon then lost back-to-back bouts against now-Hall of Famer Urijah Faber and Rob Font, but he’s back on track with a five-fight winning streak

Daniel Cormier advises Sergei Pavlovich to be backup for Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic UFC title fight

Daniel Cormier thinks Sergei Pavlovich  should serve as an alternate for Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic . Pavlovich (17-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) scored his sixth consecutive first-round knockout when he stopped Curtis Blaydes in this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 222 headliner. Pavlovich said he intends on waiting for the winner of the projected heavyweight title fight between champion Jones (27-1 MMA, 21-1 UFC) and Miocic (20-4 MMA, 14-4 UFC), but Cormier suggests he weighs in as a backup just like he did for Jones’ vacant title fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285. “I weigh in, and I sit there as an alternate,” Cormier said of Pavlovich on his ESPN show “DC & RC.” “I don’t know if I fight again, because against Ciryl Gane, nobody knew it, but he was the alternate. So he sat there, made the weight, and then when Jon and Ciryl fought, he was just out. But he got paid some money. You don’t wanna risk letting your money dry up. You still get paid along the journey while you still may

Kai Kamaka wants quick turnaround after Bellator 295 win, suggests Weber Almeida next

HONOLULU – Kai Kamaka  is ready to jump straight back to action after Bellator 295. Kamaka (11-5-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) defeated Adli Edwards by unanimous decision this past Saturday at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena. Kamaka wants a ranked opponent or Weber Almeida – who was booked to face Keoni Diggs on the same night before the fight was scrapped due to weight-cutting issues from Diggs’ side. “Give me anybody, 7,8,9,” Kamaka told MMA Junkie and other reporters at the post-fight news conference. “Keoni Diggs missed weight. Give me Weber Almeida. Give me any of those guys. Just give me somebody and get me in quick. I’m healthy, I’m always getting better, I don’t take any shortcuts. “I make weight. I don’t ask for catchweight. I do my part so the promotion, they’ve got to see that. I show up anywhere. I show up for people. A lot of times I show up for people that don’t show up, and I make weight every single time. That’s the main thing.” Kamaka, who stopped Kevin Boehm in his past outing at

UFC Fight Night 222's Jeremiah Wells confident he outpointed Matthew Semelsberger despite knockdowns

LAS VEGAS – Jeremiah Wells knew he won in his return to the octagon, despite getting knocked down a couple of times in the process. The UFC welterweight defeated Matthew Semelsberger in the opening bout of the UFC Fight Night 222 main card, which took place on Saturday night at the UFC Apex. Wells (21-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) won a split decision, defeating Semelsberger (11-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) with two 30-27 scores in his favor, opposite a dissenting 28-29 score for his opponent from the official judges. “I knew I had at least two rounds,” Wells said at the UFC Fight Night 222 post-fight press conference. “I know he kind of beat me in the first round, but I was confident that I was going to win. I gave myself two rounds because the first round I was knocked down. I was like, ‘Damn.’ I haven’t gotten knocked down in years. I feel like I was a little rusty. UFC's Arnold Allen targets Brian Ortega next: We're both 'looking for redemption'

Arnold Allen sees Brian Ortega as the perfect matchup to return to UFC featherweight title contention. Allen’s (19-2 MMA, 10-1 UFC) 10-fight winning streak was snapped when he dropped a unanimous decision to former champion Max Holloway in the UFC on ESPN 44 headliner earlier this month. Allen came on strong in Round 5, but it was too little too late. “Almighty” is yet to get his crack at featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and thinks former title challenger Ortega is the key to getting him there. “That’s probably the matchup that makes the most sense,” Allen told Sky Sports . “We’re both in the same position. We’re looking for redemption. He’s had his title shot. I’m still trying to earn mine. That’s the guy to put me right back in there. A win there, 100 percent we’ll be back in that title talk.” Ortega (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) is coming off a first-round TKO loss due to injury after dislocating his shoulder against Yair Rodriguez last July. Despite Ortega’s recent rough
