Robert Whittaker thinks Khamzat Chimaev is a 'terrible fight' for Colby Covington

Robert Whittaker doesn’t give Colby Covington too much of a chance in a fight with Khamzat Chimaev.

With UFC president Dana White saying Chimaev (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) vs. Covington (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) could serve as a co-main event to a potential trilogy bout between champion Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman, Whittaker thinks Chimaev would have his way with Covington.

Whittaker pointed to Covington’s two losses to ex-champ Kamaru Usman in which he was knocked down multiple times in what were predominantly kickboxing fights between two elite wrestlers.

“Stylistically, fight-wise, I think that’s a terrible fight for Colby,” Whittaker told Submission Radio. “Terrible. Because you saw with Usman that anyone Colby can’t just relentlessly spam takedowns on, it becomes a kickboxing fight and a striking match. And I think Covington’s great at what he does, but he’s not a kickboxer, he’s not a striker by trade. That doesn’t come naturally to him.

“His pressure style and wrestling style is what comes naturally to him. Khamzat can counter-wrestle Colby. He’s a big dude with long range and a lot of reach, and his striking is nothing ridiculously crazy, but it’s put together at a high level. And he integrates that with the threat of his wrestling and grappling takedowns stupendously. So, I think Khamzat for Colby is a bad matchup.”

When Chimaev was asked about a potential fight with Whittaker after his UFC 279 win over Kevin Holland, he said he’d rather train with him than fight him. And Whittaker is all for the idea.

“I don’t know him personally, like, his character or anything like that, but skill-wise and the skill sets he brings into the octagon when he fights, they’re very high caliber, high tier,” Whittaker said. “And I am a believer that iron sharpens iron. And if me and him got together and started working on our skillsets and mentalities, it’s a scary prospect, isn’t it?”

He continued, “I’m not gonna rule it out. There’s all possibility in the world at this point that I could one day get together with him and train.”

Perhaps Whittaker could link up with Chimaev ahead of his pivotal middleweight clash with Paulo Costa on Feb. 12 at UFC 284 on Feb. 12 in Perth, Australia.

UFC's Ilia Topuria no longer interested in Paddy Pimblett: 'As a fighter we all know he's not worth anything'

MIAMI – Ilia Topuria has lost interest in a potential fight against Paddy Pimblett . After several shots at each other in interviews and on social media, a scuffle in a hotel lobby , and a post-fight callout in the octagon, Topuria said he is done trying to get a fight against Pimblett. Now highly ranked and with his sights on the UFC featherweight title, Topuria believes he’s past Pimblett and fighting him would be taking a step back. “Paddy, you know what happens with Paddy?” Topuria said in Spanish at a media day this past Saturday . “He’s a person that media attention wise, he’s big. But as a fighter we all know he’s not worth anything. He’s not even ranked. He hasn’t done anything. “So giving merit to a person that’s only where he is because he knows how to sell himself well, I don’t think that’s the right thing to do. We’re athletes. In the UFC, the difference between them and other organizations is that here what’s valued is the sport and Paddy, sporting wise, hasn’t achiev...

Logan Paul, KSI to fight (separately) as part of Misfits Boxing 'The Prime Card'

Logan Paul and KSI will top an upcoming Misfits Boxing card entitled “The Prime Card,” they announced Friday on social media . The event takes place Oct. 14 at AO Arena in Manchester, England and streams on DAZN pay-per-view. Opponents for the two influencers-turned-boxers have not yet been announced. It is unclear if the bouts will be professional or exhibition. Paul, 28, has not competed in a professional boxing match since he fought and lost to  KSI in November 2019. The bout was a rematch of an August 2018 amateur fight which ended in a draw. In June 2021, Paul competed in an exhibition bout against Floyd Mayweather and went all eight rounds in a non-scored bout. While he’s been relatively inactive in boxing, Paul has thrilled fans with his athleticism in intermittent appearances in pro wrestling bouts for WWE. KSI, 30, has competed four times since the pro bout against Paul. All four of those matches were exhibitions. KSI won three of them inside the distance, while a f...
