Robert Whittaker thinks Khamzat Chimaev is a 'terrible fight' for Colby Covington

Robert Whittaker doesn’t give Colby Covington too much of a chance in a fight with Khamzat Chimaev . With UFC president Dana White saying Chimaev (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) vs. Covington (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) could serve as a co-main event to a potential trilogy bout between champion Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman, Whittaker thinks Chimaev would have his way with Covington. Whittaker pointed to Covington’s two losses to ex-champ Kamaru Usman in which he was knocked down multiple times in what were predominantly kickboxing fights between two elite wrestlers. “Stylistically, fight-wise, I think that’s a terrible fight for Colby,” Whittaker told Submission Radio. “Terrible. Because you saw with Usman that anyone Colby can’t just relentlessly spam takedowns on, it becomes a kickboxing fight and a striking match. And I think Covington’s great at what he does, but he’s not a kickboxer, he’s not a striker by trade. That doesn’t come naturally to him. “His pressure style and wrestling style is

After UFC Fight Night 213 debut win, Waldo Cortes-Acosta calls out Mohammed Usman

LAS VEGAS – Waldo Cortes-Acosta didn’t get a finish in his debut, but was glad to have the chance to express himself while showing his abilities on the main card of UFC Fight Night 213 . The Dominican heavyweight was unable to put Jared Vanderaa away, despite landing a number of hard punches that found their target. In return, Vanderaa (12-10 MMA, 1-6 UFC) landed hard leg kicks that Cortes-Acosta (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) appeared to have no answer for initially, but drew out audible taunts and emotion. “Yeah, I felt them, but that’s why we’re here,” Cortes-Acosta told reporters through an interpreter at the post-fight news conference. “It’s a war, and whatever he needs to do. If your leg is shot, whatever happens, you need to keep pounding.” “Salsa Boy” said he does not believe his leg is injured, just swollen and painful. He anticipates he’ll be able to return to training in a few days. While working through the leg kicks approach of his opponent, Cortes-Acosta taunted a number of t

UFC Fight Night 213 winner Marcos Rogerio de Lima wants top 15 opponent at UFC 283 in Rio

LAS VEGAS – Marcos Rogerio de Lima  thinks it’s time he drew a ranked opponent. De Lima (20-8-1 MMA, 9-6 UFC)  made quick work of former heavyweight champion and American Top Team teammate Andrei Arlovski at UFC Fight Night 213 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. With wins in three of his past four, the Brazilian wants a step up in competition – and he wants it at home. “Pezao” hasn’t fought in Brazil since a submission loss to Gadzhimurad Antigulov in November 2016 and hopes to land on the UFC 283 card on Jan. 21 in Rio de Janeiro. “It would be really great to actually fight in Brazil – a card that’s going to be really important, the return of the UFC in Rio,” De Lima told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 213 post-fight press conference. “I think it would be really good. Obviously, (I want to fight) someone in the top 15 because I think I deserve the shot. It would be great to have a rematch against Blagoy (Ivanov) from last time. I know the UFC won’t set up that matchup, but anyone

Unfortunate circumstances: 13 unforeseen injuries that ended UFC main events

For the first time in UFC history, back-to-back main events have ended with a “TKO due to injury” designation. First, it was UFC on ABC 3, where Brian Ortega suffered a shoulder injury upon his escape from a Yair Rodriguez submission attempt. One week later, Tom Aspinall suffered a knee injury that ended his UFC Fight Night 208 main event vs. Curtis Blaydes in premature fashion. While the term “freak injury” might not be appropriate to use when discussing a sport that is inherently dangerous, 13 have ended in unforeseen injuries – broken legs, separated shoulders, eye pokes, etc. – that don’t typically come in the sequence of MMA combat. Scroll below to see a chronology of UFC main events that ended in that nature. Note: Injuries sustained on a TKO due to strikes or tapout due to a submission are not included, nor are retirements on the stool due to extended fight damage or exhaustion. Laceration-based stoppages also are not included since they come as an intentional result of th

Cain Velasquez petition for writ of habeas corpus denied by California appellate court

An appeal filed by the legal team of incarcerated former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been denied. The Sixth Appellate Court of California denied a petition for writ of habeas corpus in an order issued Wednesday, according to a court record obtained by MMA Junkie. The 246-page request , which challenged past rulings of Santa Clara County Judge Shelyna Brown denying Velasquez bail , was denied summarily, meaning without explanation. Velasquez’s lead attorney Mark Geragos did not immediately respond to MMA Junkie’s request for comment. Facing a handful of charges, including attempted murder, Velasquez is set for a pre-trial hearing Nov. 7 in San Jose, Calif. His alleged shooting target, accused child molester Harry Goularte, will have a pre-trial hearing of his own Nov. 14. Goularte faces one felony charge of lewd acts with a minor, allegedly Velasquez’s 4-year-old son. Velasquez, 40, faces 20 years to life in prison if found guilty. Goularte, who is currently out

Khalil Rountree defends split decision win, says he won't fight until he's in the UFC video game

LAS VEGAS – Regardless of any opinions, Khalil Rountree is happy with his performance against Dustin Jacoby at UFC Fight Night 213. Rountree (11-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) scored a tightly contested split decision win over Jacoby at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The judges only unanimously agreed on Round 3 in Rountree’s favor, but had opposing views on Rounds 1 and 2. But Rountree thinks he did enough to get the victory. For him, securing Round 3 was a win in itself. “For me personally and what I gave, internally, knowing that I had to come out in the third round and give better effort than the second, I did my very best to just push a little harder,” Rountree told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 213 post-fight press conference. “Not necessarily than him, but push myself a little bit harder, and so whether the judges gave me that or not, it was a victory for me. “I was swinging big. I’m OK with it because enough landed for me to get that decision. But that’s definitely not the best version

Point-fighting standout Tedrick Macklin analyzes MMA transition, says there's merit to stigma: 'You have to be realistic'

Tedrick Macklin grew up a point-fighter, but that doesn’t mean he wholly disagrees with some of the criticism of the fighting style. A rising prospect on the Texas regional scene, Macklin (3-0) has trucked every opponent thrown his way over the course of his short professional career. But his combat sports competition started long before MMA. A taekwondo black belt, Macklin began in the discipline at age 6. He won a state title and eventually competed internationally for the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) in continuous point-fighting. That’s his background, his foundation, his roots – and Macklin doesn’t mind the “point-fighter” tag. At the same time, he understands the criticism. He’s not a discipline homer. Sometimes, he admitted, aspects don’t work in MMA. “There are things that you do at the average level of point-fighting that’ll get you hurt in MMA. That’s what I truly do believe,” Macklin recently told MMA Junkie. “The people who have been doing it as long a

Four UK stadiums that could host Leon Edwards’ trilogy fight against Kamaru Usman

Sean O’Malley’s coach doesn’t believe Petr Yan win at UFC 280 was a robbery

Sean O’Malley’s head coach Tim Welch doesn’t believe his student’s win over Petr Yan was a robbery. Last weekend at UFC 280, Sean O’Malley shocked the world by defeating Petr Yan after an incredibly tight three-round affair in Abu Dhabi. The fight served as a huge step up in competition for O’Malley who, up to this point, hadn’t really been tested by anyone outside of Marlon Vera.
